What is Self-Determination?
Self-determination refers to the belief and ability to control one’s own life choices. It encompasses a deep understanding of oneself, setting goals, sharing those goals with others, selecting appropriate support systems, and making choices that align with personal aspirations and values. Self-determined individuals actively take action and play a proactive role in shaping their lives.
Being self-determined empowers individuals to achieve greater academic success and proactively pursue their dreams. They possess a drive to make things happen and actively work towards their goals, demonstrating perseverance and resilience in the face of challenges.
“Being self-determined is about making things happen in your life.”

The differences between Self-Determination and Self-Advocacy
While self-determination focuses on the belief in personal control and decision-making, self-advocacy is the ability to express one’s thoughts, goals, and needs in a positive and assertive manner. Self-advocacy goes hand in hand with self-determination, as it involves effectively communicating one’s desires, seeking support, and advocating for oneself.
It is a crucial step in finding the right assistance and resources to help achieve personal goals. By engaging in self-advocacy, individuals can effectively articulate their needs and collaborate with others to access the support necessary for their success.
